The Boyds.
I have baked for as long as I can remember. Really, I have been in the kitchen for as long as I can remember. Raised in Louisiana by a cater and an exceptional cook, some of my best childhood memories including The (Cajun) Holy Trinity, crawfish boils, and Sunday nights in the kitchen learning how to cook.
In 2014, I married a Kansas City man that I met at LSU (Geaux Tigers!) and uprooted from the South to the Midwest. A year into marriage Benjamin, the great pit master that he is, volunteered us to cater an entire wedding out of our tiny kitchen. There we began our lives as food caters. Kidding. There we swore to never volunteer to cook for a wedding again… (we don’t learn easily).
When I was on maternity leave with our second daughter, I wanted to decorate Valentine’s cookies with my two-year-old. I texted my hometown cookie lady (the one who let me & my bridesmaids “help her” make dozens & dozens of cookie favors for our wedding — I still owe you, Casey) and asked her for some sugar cookie tips and tricks. After a trip to Michaels, several Youtube videos, & some basic heart cookies later, I was hooked!
St. Patrick’s Day seemed liked the next best excuse to try my hand at cookies. So I did more research, made more messes, posted a photo to my Instagram stories, & the rest is history. Kind of. A few friends graciously asked me to make them cookies for various things. Over the next weeks, I forced lots of folks to try my cookies and even had my talented college roommate make me a logo. I launched my Instagram page March 1, 2021 and haven’t looked back.
By this time, I had decided to pause my 7-year-long teaching career (yay middle school math!) to stay home with the girls. People simultaneously kept eating my cookies and kept entrusting me to bake sweets for their events. Weeks into Emmceebakes, I accidentally got us back into the wedding scene, agreeing to make dozens upon dozens (24 to be exact) of cookies for a wedding as well as 9-tiered cookie cake.
I blinked and 6-months had gone by in the cookie world. Blinked again and I was full on launching a website — just ten months after I dreamed of making Valentine’s sugar cookies with my little girl. Life has been oh so sweet & I am just incredibly grateful for where a little butter & sugar has taken me. I am most grateful for all of you fine folks who are along for this messy ride.
